Google Places ~ Google+ Local Search Marketing
Google Places is a service that was rolled out by Google way back in 2008. It was set up primarily to help give small to medium sized local businesses (SMBs) an opportunity to get themselves found online. Google Places has gone through many changes and upgrades since then and has most recently been migrated to the new Google+ Local platform which is a more socially based local business network.
Google are going to great lengths to make sure that their new Google+ platform is a success and it’s in every SMB owner’s best interest to have a well optimised Google+ Local page as they increase in popularity and importance in the near future.
It provides a fantastic opportunity for SMB’s to gain visibility on the first page, where it matters.
When we search for a product or service and include the name of a town or city in the search query e.g. “solicitors Killarney”, “laptop repairs Buncrana” or even “dog walker Dublin”, the results we receive include a section set aside for Google+ Local mini-sites. These are depicted by the little red pin markers assigned to each business.(see screenshot)
Google Places has been around for a while now and has proven to be the most effective local search marketing platform for brick and mortar businesses. The new Google+ Local platform with it’s social integration is about to become an essential part of every business profile.
Put simply, it’s an extremely effective way for businesses to get themselves found online, and you don’t even need a website!
What the Experts Say
As Google says:
[gn_quote style=”2″] More people search for businesses online than anywhere else, and 90% of these searchers won’t look past page one of the results page, so it’s important to make sure your business listing can be easily found on Google Places.[/gn_quote] The days of picking up the Yellow Pages to find local businesses are long gone. By the end of 2012 over 50% of mobile phone users in Ireland are expected to own a smart phone. This means users are able to search for local businesses while out and about, wherever they are. For this reason alone, it’s absolutely essential that businesses of all sizes have a fully optimised, online presence if they want to be found.
What’s also important to mention about local searchers is that they are a lot further along in the decision making process. Microsoft’s Dennis Glavin revealed these compelling statistics recently:
- 70% of local search queries from a PC result in an offline purchase within one week
- 70% of mobile users do so within the next hour!
