Google Places is a service that was rolled out by Google way back in 2008. It was set up primarily to help give small to medium sized local businesses (SMBs) an opportunity to get themselves found online. Google Places has gone through many changes and upgrades since then and has most recently been migrated to the new Google+ Local platform which is a more socially based local business network.
